1 Historical markers of how British Malaya came into being—1789: Penang was founded; 1819: Singapore was founded; 1824: Malacca was ceded to the British by the Dutch; Singapore ceded to the British by Johor; 1826: the Straits Settlements of Penang, Singapore and Malacca were formed; 1874: Perak and Selangor accepted British Residents as advisors; Dinding became part of the Straits Settlements; 1887: Pahang accepted a British agent; 1896: the Federated Malay States of Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang were formed; 1909: Siam handed its rights to Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu to Britain; 1914: Johor accepted a British advisor, making British control over the Malay Peninsula complete.

2 Bird’s writings preceded that of Joseph Conrad and William Somerset Maugham, who are more well-known than Bird for their writings about Malaya and Borneo. Joseph Conrad’s first novel, Almayer’s Folly (1895) was set in Borneo; and one of his most famous novels, Lord Jim, was also inspired by Malaya and Borneo. William Somerset Maugham wrote several short stories based on Malaya and Borneo in the 1920s and 1930s.

3 The prahu or wooden longboat in Bird’s day, as she describes, “was a flattish-bottomed boat about twenty-two-and-a-half-feet long by six-and-a-half-feet broad, with a bamboo gridiron flooring resting on the gunwale for the greater part of its length. This was covered for seven feet in the middle by a low, circular roof, thatched with attap.”
